Tikal Maya Temples in Guatemala

Hidden deep within the lush Petén rainforest, Tikal National Park is home to one of the most powerful and mysterious ancient Maya cities ever discovered. Towering pyramids rise above the jungle canopy, surrounded by rich wildlife and sacred temples. Located just a few hours from San Ignacio, Belize, this UNESCO World Heritage Site in Guatemala boasts stunning architecture, a rich history, and the chance to walk through a living museum. With a professional guide leading the way, you’ll explore majestic temples, ancient ball courts, and ceremonial plazas, all while howler monkeys and toucans echo in the trees above.

Your journey begins early in the morning with a scenic drive from San Ignacio, Belize, to the Guatemalan border. After a smooth border crossing, you’ll continue your drive into the Guatemalan lowlands, where the dense jungle begins to reveal the towering wonders of Tikal National Park. The drive itself offers spectacular views of the changing landscape, rural communities, and forested terrain.

Upon arrival, you’ll meet your certified local guide and begin your walking exploration of the Tikal ruins. Tikal was once a dominant city-state of the ancient Maya, reaching its height during the Classic Period (200–900 AD). The site includes over 3,000 structures spread across more than 6 square miles. You’ll walk through the Great Plaza, flanked by Temple I (Temple of the Great Jaguar) and Temple II (Temple of the Masks)—two of the most iconic structures in the Maya world.

Climb to the top of Temple IV, the tallest pre-Columbian structure in the Americas, for a breathtaking view above the jungle canopy. This very spot was made famous in the Star Wars film “A New Hope.” As you explore, your guide will share stories about Tikal’s rulers, wars, alliances, and the spiritual practices that shaped its culture.

Wildlife lovers will also enjoy this tour for its vibrant biodiversity. As you move from temple to temple, you’ll likely spot howler monkeys, spider monkeys, coatis, toucans, and colorful butterflies fluttering through the thick canopy.

After a few hours of exploration, you’ll enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant near the park before starting your return trip to Belize, arriving back in San Ignacio in the late afternoon or early evening.
