Crystal Cave Adventure at St. Herman’s Blue Hole National Park

Located outside Belmopan, Belize’s Capital, along the scenic Hummingbird Highway, an extraordinary adventure awaits. Locally known as the Mountain Cow Cave, the stunning, other-worldly Crystal Cave is found deep in the jungle, in the heart of the Blue Hole National Park. Venture into the well-maintained trails where you may encounter an exciting array of bird species, or small mammals, insects, and spider monkeys that reside near the area. Inside the cave, we discover remnants of the past, such as centuries-old fire pits, wall carvings, pottery, and other relics, as well as impressive crystal formations and stalactites and stalagmites. Prepare to traverse through the large chambers of the cave, fit through tight spaces, slide down mud ramps, and scramble along rocks. This is perhaps the most challenging jungle adventure Belize has to offer. After your muddy adventure, we head back to the parking lot to enjoy a refreshing Belizean lunch before taking a rejuvenating dip in the inland Blue Hole.

Locally known as the Mountain Cow Cave, this stunning, other-worldly Crystal Cave is located deep in the jungle, in the heart of the Blue Hole National Park, along the scenic Hummingbird Highway. The drive to Crystal Cave takes approximately 1.5 hours on fully paved roads. We leave San Ignacio in the morning and head towards Belmopan, passing the capital city and proceeding along the scenic Hummingbird Highway, crossing green mountains, passing fragrant orange orchards, pineapple plantations, and rainforest-draped valleys along the way. The Blue Hole National Park is a picturesque and easily accessible protected area managed by the Belize Audubon Society.

After a 50-minute hike through the tropical forest, we reach the cave entrance, where we climb down 15 feet into the cavernous opening of Crystal Cave. We traverse through vast chambers, sliding down mud ramps and scrambling along boulders and stalagmites. This descent into the cave mirrors the ancient Mayan journey into Xibalba, the spiritual underworld. Our experienced guides will lead you past shimmering crystal formations and into areas where ancient rituals were performed.

Inside the cave, we explore ceremonial spaces where fire pits, pottery shards, obsidian blades, and skeletal remains have been found—many untouched since the time of the Maya. The narrow passageways, dramatic rock structures, and sacred energy make this experience feel like a walk through time. As your headlamp flickers over ancient relics and glittering mineral deposits, you’ll understand why this is one of Belize’s most powerful underground adventures.

The cave system is a blend of rugged beauty and spiritual heritage. It requires physical effort, but the reward is a deeper understanding of Maya culture and a rare glimpse into their sacred traditions. Our guides ensure safety while sharing stories of history, geology, and cultural context throughout the journey.

After emerging from the cave, we enjoy a fresh, homemade Belizean lunch at the reserve before heading to the inland Blue Hole—a serene cenote where you can relax and swim in the cool, turquoise waters surrounded by lush greenery. The day ends with a peaceful ride back to San Ignacio.
