ATM Cave Adventure tour

Deep within the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve lies one of the world’s most awe-inspiring and mysterious cave systems—Actun Tunichil Muknal, or the ATM Cave. This full-day expedition is a true blend of adventure, archaeology, and raw jungle immersion. To reach the cave, we trek across jungle trails and river crossings, encountering the region’s thriving flora and fauna. Inside, we navigate chambers filled with ancient Maya ceremonial artifacts, pottery, skeletal remains, and mesmerizing stalactites and stalagmites. The ATM Cave is a sacred site where the Maya once performed ritual sacrifices to appease their gods—most famously, the “Crystal Maiden,” a fully intact skeleton of a young sacrificial victim, preserved by mineral deposits. This is a once-in-a-lifetime journey into Belize’s heart of mystery.

The Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave is Belize’s most iconic archaeological adventure and one of the most spiritually powerful cave systems in the world. Located in the heart of the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve, this experience combines the thrills of jungle trekking, river crossings, cave exploration, and cultural immersion into the world of the ancient Maya. The cave is protected by the Belize Institute of Archaeology and access is limited to preserve its fragile history.

The adventure begins with a scenic drive from San Ignacio through small villages and forested terrain to the reserve. Upon arrival, you’ll receive a safety briefing and gear up for the 45-minute jungle hike. Along the trail, we cross three rivers and wind through dense tropical forest teeming with birds, howler monkeys, and vibrant flora. The journey alone is an adventure, immersing you in Belize’s wild natural beauty.

Upon reaching the cave entrance, you’ll swim across a blue pool into the shadowy mouth of the ATM Cave. From here, the real exploration begins—walking, wading, and sometimes crawling through narrow tunnels and wide chambers filled with eerie formations and relics of the past. The cave was a sacred site for the Maya who believed it to be an entrance to the underworld, or Xibalba. It was here that rituals, including human sacrifice, were performed to appease the gods during times of drought or hardship.

Inside the upper chambers, you’ll come face to face with original Maya artifacts that have remained undisturbed for over a millennium. Pottery, tools, and obsidian blades lie next to the skeletal remains of sacrificial victims. The highlight is the “Crystal Maiden”—a full skeleton of a teenage girl whose bones have been calcified over time to shimmer like crystal.

This is an intense, physically demanding tour, but also one of the most rewarding. You’ll walk in the literal footsteps of Maya priests and kings, in a cave that feels more like a sacred cathedral than a natural formation. Guides are trained in cave archaeology and safety to ensure both an educational and safe experience.

After exiting the cave, we’ll return to the picnic area to enjoy a traditional Belizean lunch before heading back to San Ignacio with memories of an ancient world few get to witness firsthand.
